Recent Advances in the Management of Gastrointestinal Cancers

Abstract
As the first most common cause of cancer in the Korea, cancers of the gastrointestinal tract pose major health ¢¥threat. Approximately a half of the estimated 60,000 new cases diagnosed¢¥ each year attributable` to gastrointestinal cancers of these tumors, gastric cancers are by far the most evalent, afflicting a half of gastrointestinal cancer patients. Although progress in treating istrointestinal cancers has been slow, several new approaches have resulted in increased response Ltes and, in some cases, improved survival rates. Efforts to enhance response to 5-fluorouracil(5`-U) in the treatment of colorectal cancer by the addition of various biochemical or biological modulors have yielded encouraging results. Combinations of 5-FU with leucovorin, methotrexate, vamisole, or interferon alfa have resulted in significant increases in response ratnes and, in cases` 5-FU/1eucovorin and 5-FU/levamisole, increased survival. Promising result have also obtained in e treatment of hepatocellular cancer with an antiferritin MoAb/radioisotope conjugate.
